Prescreened Offers for Credit and Insurance
Have you received credit card offers in the mail that indicate you’ve been prequalified? Have you ever wondered how you got selected?
It is based on information on your credit report. Creditors and insurance companies decide what requirements are needed for you to qualify for their product. Information such as borrowing and payment history, or credit score. The creditor then asks a credit bureau to give them a list of people in their databases who meets their criteria.
Although prescreening does not negatively affect your credit, this may be something that some of us prefer not to receive.
You have the ability to opt out! You can opt out for five years, or permanently, by following the steps listed in the link below. It does work, I did it years ago and I receive very few offers. It is even indicated on my credit report that I have opted out.
The opt out option does not stop offers that utilize other sources to gather consumer information.
This link also provides information on other opt out programs such as DoNotCall.gov and DMAchoice.org.
As a financial coach I believe opting out of unwanted offers can help prevent fraud and decrease mail and email traffic.
Regular reviews of your credit reports can also help with fraud prevention. By making sure the information on your credit report is accurate you can feel more confident about who is utilizing your personal data.
